Properly packing furniture is one of the most critical aspects of any move. Damaged furniture can be costly to repair or replace, and with the right packing techniques, you can ensure everything arrives at your new location in perfect condition.

1. Gather Your Packing Materials

Before you start, collect all the necessary supplies:

  • Moving blankets and furniture pads
  • Bubble wrap (large and small bubbles)
  • Stretch wrap/plastic wrap
  • Packing tape and dispenser
  • Corner protectors and edge guards
  • Sturdy cardboard boxes of various sizes
  • Markers for labeling
  • Screwdriver set for disassembly

2. Disassemble When Possible

Take apart furniture that can be disassembled. This includes bed frames, tables, desks, and shelving units. Keep all hardware in labeled bags and tape them to the corresponding furniture piece. Take photos before disassembly to make reassembly easier.

3. Wrap with Moving Blankets

Start by covering large furniture pieces with moving blankets. These provide a thick layer of protection against scratches, dents, and minor impacts. Secure the blankets with packing tape, but avoid taping directly on the furniture surface.

Pro Tip:

For wooden furniture, apply a layer of stretch wrap first to protect the finish, then add moving blankets on top. This prevents tape residue from damaging the wood surface.

4. Use Bubble Wrap for Delicate Areas

Apply bubble wrap to vulnerable parts like glass panels, decorative elements, and fragile edges. Use multiple layers for extra protection and secure with tape. For glass tabletops, consider using cardboard on both sides of the glass before wrapping.

5. Protect Corners and Edges

Corners and edges are the most vulnerable parts of furniture during transit. Use cardboard corner protectors or foam padding on all exposed corners. For sharp edges, wrap with foam pipe insulation for a custom fit.

6. Use Proper Boxes for Smaller Items

Drawers, shelves, and removable parts should be packed in sturdy boxes. Wrap each piece individually and fill empty spaces with packing paper or bubble wrap to prevent movement inside the box.

7. Label Everything

Clear labeling saves time and prevents confusion. On each box and wrapped furniture piece, note:

  • Contents of the box
  • Destination room
  • Fragile or handling instructions
  • Weight category (light, medium, heavy)

8. Don't Overpack Boxes

Overpacked boxes can break during transport, damaging their contents. Keep boxes at a manageable weight, ideally under 20 kg. It's better to have more boxes with less weight than fewer, overloaded ones.

Loading Tips

When loading furniture onto a truck, follow these guidelines:

  • Place heaviest items first, against the truck wall
  • Stand mattresses on their sides to save space
  • Fill gaps between items to prevent shifting
  • Never stack heavy items on fragile furniture
  • Use straps to secure furniture and prevent movement
